Z’otz Cafe

This place reminds me of Papermoon Diner in Baltimore because you’re never alone — the dusty limbless mannequins and dismembered plastic body parts will be your pals. They even occupy their own seats.

The wifi password changes daily — today’s word was “brainsprain.” Timely. I’m gearing up for my STEP1 studying. The wifi is reliable and the seats 💺 are worn. Much of this cafe looks like a storage space for flea market and yard sale items.

The drink menu is very utilitarian — you’ll find $2.75 cafe au lait, $3 coffee, etc.

The quality of your drink will depend on the barista of the day. Today I had a fantastic barista who made a cafe au lait with thick white foam on the top. Is that still a cafe au lait? I don’t think so but it was still pretty good. Regardless of the incorrect recipe the barista was attentive — they asked for my milk and coffee roast preference which makes me think the drink was made with the customer in mind (me).

I would totally go here again with friends after dark — the coffee shop closes at 11pm. On solo days, it’s a bit too dark for my taste — I prefer places with natural lighting. If you are in the mood for austere yet eccentric coffee shop vibes on a rainy day (or late night), this place is for you.
